Adopt-a-Book Program

In April 2009 the Friends inaugurated an adopt-a-book program. This system allows members of the Friends, and friends who are not members, to adopt a book in Special Collections that is in critical need of repair.  The costs usually range from $150 to $800 per book.  Adopting patrons may make a partial donation toward a particular book, too.  Recognition is given to those who donate toward specific books: notice in the Friends publications and a special book plate is placed in the adopted book.

The following books are in need of adoption:

  • Coleridge, The Friend, vol. 2. 1818.    $175
  • John Beckman, A History of Inventions and Discoveries, vol. 1. 1814.    $150
  • Cowper's Homer, vol. 2.  1792   (from the Library of Washington Academy)     $200
  • Rufus W. Griswold, ed, The Gift Leaves of American Poetry.  1849      $200
