Journalism Resources -- mass media listed geographically

These sources can be used to view a list of media outlets -- newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals, television and radio -- in a particular geographical area.

 

Standard Rate and Data Service

Mostly for advertising rate information, but W&L researchers have access to two online SRDS services which can provide geographical listings of media enterprises.  (W&L subscription, password-protected.  Be sure to click on "Logout" when you are finished.)

Newspaper Advertising Resource

Information on daily papers, newspaper groups, ethnic newspapers, college newspapers, comics and newspaper-distributed magazines.

After logging in with password:

• Click on Newspaper Advertising Source.
• Click on "Display/ROP" in the column on the left.
• From the options on the right (name, city, state, etc.), choose a DMA (Designated Market Area).

TV & Cable Source

Information on broadcast, cable, syndicated and alternative television.

After logging in with password:

• Click on TV and Cable Source.
• Click on "TV Stations & Cable Systems" in the column on the left.
• From the options on the right (name, city, state, etc.), choose a DMA (Designated Market Area).

Ulrich's Periodical Directory

Directory of periodical and serial publications, providing information on about 300,000 magazines, journals, newspapers, yearbooks, and other types of publications.   (W&L subscription)

For a geographical listing:

• Click on the "Advanced Search" button near the top of the page.
• Use the drop-down menu options to select "Publisher State" and "Publisher City" and click on "Search."

For example, here is the result for Lexington, Virginia.

Online Newspapers and Other Mass Media Sites

This is a page elsewhere in the W&L University Library site which lists resources providing geographically-arranged links to mass media Web sites.   Mostly newspapers, but also magazines and other media.

 

In addition to the above online resources, the Washington and Lee University Library also has two print-only annual publications which are highly respected in the profession.  The most recent editions shelved in the Reference collection.
