What is the Periodical Finder?
The Periodical Finder is a finding aid. It will affirm if the Library has a journal available electronically or in print. The Periodical Finder is used after you have done your bibliographic search for articles in one of our databases.
A link to the Periodical Finder is available on the Library's homepage and from many other pages on the Library's website.
To take a look at it, click here.
How to use the Periodical Finder
You can BROWSE the titles alphabetically, or you can SEARCH for a particular title. For example: you want to know if the Library can provide you with a copy of an article published in the September 1992 issue of the journal The Black Collegian.
Enter the journal title into the FIND box at the top right of your screen, and press the Search key. You will then see the following information:
The black collegian |
||||||
Publisher: Imdiversity, Incorporated Subject: Special Aspects of Education |
||||||
What this information tells you is that:
a) our Library currently does not own this journal, because there is no link to Annie, our online catalog. *)
b) two databases we subscribe to have full-text coverage for this journal, but only one database includes the year you are looking for (1992), and that is ProQuest.
Click on the ProQuest link, which will take you to The Black Collegian entry. Select the issue you are looking for (September 1992), and then select the article you are looking for. Often, there are several formats in which you can view the text. PDF gives you the full image of the article (including text, pictures, graphs); other formats will only show the text without the graphics.
*) NOTE: to be completely sure the library does not have the journal article you need, a search in our online catalog Annie is necessary. This is because there are some older journals we still have on the shelves, even though we have no current subscription to them. For example, we had a subscription to the Revue de la Pensee Francaise from 1943-1956 only. To view, click here.
When the Library does NOT have the article available
If your journal title search does not return any results, this means that the Library does not have access to the article. You should then request the article on INTERLIBRARY LOAN. A link to the request form is located near the top of the page.
Other uses of the Periodical Finder
You can browse the journals in the Periodical Finder by SUBJECT. The tab "Subjects" is located near the top left of the page. This will show you an organized list of subjects and the journals that have been assigned to that subject. To view, click here.
You can do an ADVANCED SEARCH by selecting the "Search" tab. This will allow you to either broaden or narrow you search. To view, click here.
