Reference Sources

Latin American and Caribbean Studies

Leyburn Library is developing a collection of online encyclopedias ( "electronic books"), databases, and other online resources for LACS research.

Here are these specialized online Reference Sources.

These resources often are useful for topic overviews, explanations of a concept, a biographical entry, some quantitative data, or other information.

We also have a significant collection of encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other similar resources which are available only in printed form, in our Reference collection on the Main Floor of the library.  Two of the most important of these are the following:

  • Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture.  Scribner's.
    REF F 1406.E53 1996    (5 volumes)
  • Encyclopedia of Contemporary Latin American and Caribbean Cultures.  Routledge.
    REF F 1406.E515 2000  (3 volumes)

Other volumes on Latin American history are also shelved in this call number area.

Reference sources on Latin American literature are shelved in the PQ 7000 area.  Perhaps the most valuable resource here is:

  • Literary Cultures of Latin America.  Oxford University Press.   REF PQ 7081.A1 L525 2004   (3 volumes)

The University of Texas' Perry-Castaneda Collection offers a very useful selection of online maps, including a few historical ones.
