Help with Gale Virtual Reference Library E-Books

Below are instructions for browsing, searching, navigating, and printing when using the Gale Virtual Reference Library e-book interface.  Not all options are available with every title.

Browsing

You may browse through a table of contents, which may organized alphabetically or thematically, by clicking on the "eTable of Contents" option, which often is sub-divided into separate volumes.  Once you choose the appropriate volume, you usually can open any section by clicking on the associated plus-sign (+).  Otherwise, simply click on the entry you want.

You also may be able to browse through the alphabetically-arranged entries in an "eBook Index," to the right of the "eTable of Contents."   Entries should have clickable page references.

Searching

To search the contents of the e-book you viewing, use the "Quick Search" option, in the upper-left portion of the screen and be sure to select the "within this title" box.

  • To search for forms of a word, use an asterisk (*) to substitute for one or more letters. Example:  environment* retrieves environment, environmental, environmentalist, etc.
  • To search for entries containing more than one word, combine the words with AND.   Example:  religio* AND nationalis*
  • To search for multi-words terms or phrases, enclose the words with quotations marks.  Example:  "native americans"

To search through this book and ALL the other Gale Virtual Reference Library books to which we have access,

make sure the "Quick Search" box's "within this publication" option is NOT checked before following the above search guidelines.

Printing / E-Mailing

To print or e-mail an article, select the appropriate option, located in the upper-left corner of the screen.
