• Type a word or phrase in one or more of the search boxes. If you put something in more than one box, results must meet ALL criteria.
• Use an asterisk at the end of a word to retrieve various forms of that word. For example, mone* will find money or monetary.
• Use an ampersand between words in a box if you want each word to be present. For example, productivity & technology in the title box will find only those publications that have both words in the title. Add an * after technolog* to retrieve publications that have all forms of technology (technologies, technological) and productivity in the title.
• Use a slash between words in a box if you want either word to be present. For example, Federal Open Market Committee/FOMC
• Use a colon between years in the Publication year box to select a range of years. For example, 2004:2006
• Use an exclamation point between words to exclude the second term. For example, productivity ! technolog*
• Click on the Browse Index box and choose Words List or Terms List (in some cases only one list is available) to browse either of these indexes. Then click on paste to put the selected entry into the search box. Note that the version and/or settings of your browser may affect the Browse Index feature.
• Use the Reset Button to clear the search form.

If you retrieve too many records, consider limiting your search by year. You could also use the exclamation point in a search box or the NOT to the left of the search boxes.

Delivery

A Google Custom Search Engine searches these pages. As this technology is still in beta testing, the results might not be ideal. In particular, Google uses an approximation algorithm to search these sites.

ESE offers a "Search Plugin" for Internet Explorer 7.0 or FireFox 2.0 users. It allows you to initiate searches directly from a search box in your browser. You should be offered one for ESE when you check your search plugins.

Monthly, Quarterly and Annual trade data from 1948 until 1999, as maintained by the International Monetary Fund. Data are provided for about 180 countries and geographic areas.

Data from 1948-1979 is also available on CD-ROM, which is available at the Circulation Desk. Faculty, Staff and Students may access this data using one of the computers in the library. The disk must be in the DVD drive, then the software can be accessed from the Start menu, select "Research and Statistics," then select "IMF Data," and then select "DOTS."

StatPlanet is a browser-based interactive data visualization and mapping tool. It is used by international organizations such as UNESCO and SACMEQ, NGOs, Fortune 500 companies, government departments, schools and universities for a wide variety of purposes. It can be used to easily and rapidly create interactive thematic maps, interactive graphs, and feature-rich interactive infographics.

StatPlanet is also available as a stand-alone application which can be used as free educational software. It comes with up-to-date statistics on demography, economy, education, environment & energy, gender and health, for most countries in the world.

1. Keyword search The easiest way of accessing data is by keyword search. Please enter your search terms in the search bar on top of any page and click "Search". UNdata allows any combination of keywords to search across the institutional databases from different sources. The system recognizes countries, years, subject areas and databases and lists matching series drawn from the data warehouse.
2. Database Explorer: All databases are listed in the "Explorer". The database explorer is available under the "More" option and provides an alternative entry point to the keyword search. This does not only provide another approach to find data, but gives a good overview of the data availability by database and shows its hierarchical structure.
3. Advanced Search: You can also go to "More" and "Advanced Search" to make a refined search, which offers options for making searches more precise and getting more useful results. There is also an option to enable a "deep search", which will include the entire data series content in the search. This will probably return a bigger result set, but also takes more search time.

U.S. import statistics, U.S. export statistics, U.S. tariffs, U.S. future tariffs and U.S. tariff preference information are available.

International trade data are available for years 1989- present on a monthly, quarterly, annual, or year-to-date basis and can be retrieved in a number of classification systems, including the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC), or the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

This resource is available only to W&L users only, and access is limited to Leyburn Library and the Williams School. This database requires extensive understanding of financial and economic concepts and is recommended only for advanced users.

WRDS is a warehouse of financial, accounting, banking, economics, management, and marketing data accessible through a single web-based interface from the following resources providers: Compustat, CRSP, Federal Reserve System, FDIC, Dow Jones and other sources. Users primarily interested in company financial data should use Mergent Online.

To use WRDS, you will need to enter a valid W&L email address. WRDS will then send you an email with a link that will provide access to the WRDS database for 5 days.

The CD-ROM database may be loaded on any of the machines in the computer labs or on the laptops available at the Circulation Desk. The software will install directly from the CD-ROM. The following instructions are to install the software in the computer labs.

1. Obtain the CD-ROM at the Circulation Desk.
2. Log onto a computer.
3. Insert the disk in the CD-ROM drive.
4. Double click either on the "Shortcut to CD drive (D)" icon, or go to "My Computer" in the Start menu and select the CD-ROM drive (this should be drive D)
5. Double click on the "setup.exe" file.
6. A dialog box will open and ask whether you to choose to run the program under your user ID or as an administrator. Select the first option - installing it under your user ID and click OK.
7. The installation window should open. Follow the directions on the screen accepting the default options.
8. When the installations is finished, open the Start menu and under Programs, you should see World Development Indicators as an option.
9. When you are finished with the database, please restart the computer (don't just log out). This will clear the database from the computer.
