Our subscription includes Series 1 and 2 of the publisher's Early American Newspapers series, described here by the publisher. Browsing You can view the available issues of any of the newspapers by clicking on the "Newspaper Titles" tab near the center of the page. The subsequent list of newspapers can be re-sorted by title, publication date, city, or state by selecting the appropriate header. Click on any newspaper's title to view a chronological list of available issues, and then click on the desired date. Searching Note that you can search for one or more words in the full text of articles and/or their titles. To search for articles containing two or more words, connect the search terms with AND. Example: students AND discipline To search for articles containing a multi-word phrase, enclose the search terms within quotation marks. Example: "tea party" To search for articles containing any forms of a word, use an asterisk (*) to substitute for one or more letters. Example: emigra* finds emigrant, emigrants, emigration, etc. Note: The system will automatically search for singular and plural forms of nouns. Limiting a Search You can use the tabs in the center of the search page to limit your search by date (including "Presidential Era" or "Eras in American History"), by article type, by place of publication (state or town), or by specific newspaper(s). Printing You probably will get a clearer image if you click on the "Open image as PDF" icon before printing: | |

ACLS Humanities E-Book Project  (Info)

| Producer: | American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) / University of Michigan | |
|---|---|---|
| Sources: | Sources | |
| Description: | This database (formerly called the History E-book Project) includes the complete contents of 2,800 high-quality humanities books from nearly 100 publishers and a working group of learned societies. About 500 works are to be added each year. | |
| Usage Tips: | Browsing This option will allow you to see a list of all books in the database, listed in one of three ways. The default "Browse" option lists titles alphabetically by author's names. Other options includes listings by title and by subject.
Searching The "Search" selection includes four methods of searching the database. The basic search (the default search mode) allows you to search for a single word or a multiple-word phrase within either the "full text" of the database, the "title" of a book, the "subject" terms attached to each book, or an "author's" name. The bibliographic search is similar, but it allows searching only for words or phrase within book titles, authors' names, or within subject terms. The Boolean search allows you to search for the presence of as many as three words or phrases within a chosen range of each other: within the same "pages/paragraphs"; within the same "chapters"; within the "titles" of books. The proximity search allows you to find words or phrases within a selected distance (number of characters) from each other in works' titles, authors' names, subject terms, or full text. Truncation You can search for forms of a word by adding an asterisk (*) to the end of a word or part of a word. For example, slave* will retrieve slave, slaves, slavery, slaveholding, etc. Viewing When you click on a book title, you will retrieve a page which gives you several options, including: "Table of contents" allows you to view separate sections of the book by clicking on section titles; "Enter book" allows you to start reading the book page-by-page from the very first page; "View full catalog record" gives you the full information needed for proper citation. Printing Because of copyright considerations, the History E-Book Project deliberately does not facilitate printing. You can use your browser's printing capabilities to print one page at a time, but some pages will not fit entirely within a screen. Hint: You can increase the likelihood that a page will print in its entirety by changing the "View" option (near top of page) from "normal" to "small." | |

|---|---|---|
| Description: | Loretta Fowler's 2003 one-volume "guide to the extensive ethnohistorical research that, in recent decades, has recovered the varied and often unexpected history of Comanche, Cheyenne, Osage, and Sioux Indians, to name only a few of the tribal groups included." The library also has a printed copy. | |
| Usage Tips: | Browsing The "enter book" option in the middle of the opening screen allows to start with the first page of the book. You also can click on any chapter or section in the table of contents to go directly to that page. Navigating Once you are looking at a particular page, you can move forward or backward page-by-page by clicking on the "prev(ious)" and "next" arrows above the text. Searching The "Search this book" option offers four methods of searching the content of the book. Printing Because of copyright considerations, the Humanities E-Book Project deliberately does not facilitate printing. You can use your browser's printing capabilities to print one page at a time, but some pages will not fit entirely within a screen. Hint: You can increase the likelihood that a page will print in its entirety by changing the "View" option (near top of page) from "normal" to "small." | |

Historical Statistics Of The United States  (Info)

| Producer: | Cambridge University Press | |
|---|---|---|
| Description: | Published in 2006 as a five-volume set, HSUS is a database of over 37,000 data series (statistical categories) from U.S. and Colonial history. The database also contains extensive essays on the measurements of U.S. history. Data are available as published tables, spreadsheet files (Excel), PDF documents, and graphs or charts.
An older edition (1976) is available here. | |
| Usage Tips: | The initial screen will give you three basic methods of accessing the database, located in the upper-left corner of the screen -- Contents, Indexes, and Search.
[Table of] Contents offers five browseable Parts -- "Population," "Work and Welfare," "Economic Structure and Performance," "Economic Sectors," and "Governance and International Relations." You can see the contents of any of these Parts by clicking on the title and the subsequent sub-sections, as well as the accompanying essays. Indexes provides an alphabetic list of terms used to describe the data series -- just like an index in the back of a book. Click on the appropriate 1st Letter of the term in which you are interested, and then the subsequent 2nd Letter. Search This option allows you to search by key word(s) through tables and essays. To find entries containing two or more words, connect them with AND. Example: slave AND trade To find entries containing a multi-word phrase, click on the "Include only exact matches.." box before entering your terms. Example: slave trade This database does not allow wildcard/truncation searching. To find entries containing two or more forms of a term, connect them with OR. Example: slave OR slavery Viewing Data Once you have done a search, you will see a list of one or more entries, along with documentation (information on sources) in the left-side column. Clicking on a Table title will allow you to see at least a portion of the table, which may require some navigation to see in its entirety. You may see a more easily-readible form of the table by clicking on the PDF option. Other viewing/downloading options include Graph and Download to Excel, both of which will take you through a multi-step process to create various forms of graphs or spreadsheet file with various data elements. For more information, click on the "Help" button at the top of the screen. | |
