|---|---|---|
| Description: | eHRAF World Cultures is based on the full HRAF database, begun in 1949, which contains hundreds of thousands of pages of text on cultural groups and materials. This online eHRAF world cultures collection consists of over 350,000 pages of information on hundreds of racial and ethnic groups. Over 40,000 pages of text are added to the database each year. | |
| Usage Tips: | Each culture (group) entry should consist of a "cultural summary" and a list of reports, arranged by author, each available in full-text form.
Browse This is the simplest method of searching for a particular group, allowing you to choose among hundreds of alphabetically-arranged racial and ethnic groups. Once you have chosen "Browse," you also will see options at the top of the page to browse alphabetical lists of Regions of the world and Countries. Another browsing option at the top of the page will be Subjects, which allows you to browse through an alphabetically-arranged list of important topics, along with links to documents with a major focus ("Related Documents") on each topic. Search This option, which can search the text of the entire database, allows much more precise and powerful access to the contents of documents. Beneath the "Search" box, you will see some examples illustrating the ways in which to enter and combine search words. | |

| Description: | "World's largest database on reproductive health, containing citations with abstracts to scientific articles, reports, books, and unpublished reports in the field of population, family planning, and related health issues." | |
| Usage Tips: | Probably the most reliable way of searching for materials on a topic is "Keywords" searching. However, in POPLINE "Keywords" searching does not refer to searching through all words in the text of entries -- it searches only for "offically" accepted terms, which are listed in this thesaurus.
To search for entries containing two or more terms, connect your search terms with an ampersand (&). Example: abortion & students Some entries will include links to the "Full Text" of an article. Others may include a link to a "DOI" (digital object identifier), which will take you to the full text of an article only if W&L subscribes to that journal. | |

| Description: | The above link takes you to the first volume, Voices of Tradition, of this five-volume set (2007). The collection consists of essays by academics and prominent Muslim intellectuals, providing varied and often intimate perspectives on historical and modern Muslim experiences.
Other volumes are: Voices of the Spirit; Voices of Life (Family, Home, and Society); Voices of Art, Beauty, and Science; and Voices of Change. | |
| Usage Tips: | Unfortunately, there is no single index or table of contents that covers the entire set. Thus, you have to browse or search each volume individually.
Browsing You can browse the contents of any volume by viewing the Table of Contents in the column on the left side of the screen. Similarly, you can browse each volume's alphabetically-arranged Index, which is the next-to-last entry in each Table of Contents. The last entry in each Table of Contents is "About the Author," which provides brief information about the writer of each essay in the volume. Searching The "Quick Search" option, located near the top of the screen, allows you to search through the text of "This Title" (this volume only). To find entries containing a multi-word phrase, place the words within quotation marks. Example: "holy war" To search for forms of a word, use an asterisk (*) to substitute for one or more letters. Example: slave* will find slave, slaves, slavery, etc. To find entries containing two or more words, connect the words with AND. Example: women AND dress | |
